Village on a Diet Starts today…
join in get fit
By Judy Bell, M.S. Food and Nutrition Editor

If we asked ourselves what would happen if our whole community went on the diet the possibilities were wonderful. We’d get fit, we’d feel good…and we’d even look better. What was there to lose?

The idea for The Village on a Diet was inspired by Mrs. Janet Rursch.  Janet reads our weekly food column and sent a copy of  Good Housekeeping’s All-You-Can-Eat Soup recipe to me with a note saying, “this is delicious whether you are dieting or not. And easy way to get your quota of veggies in one meal.”

The concept was great. Just cook a pot of soup and eat it all week adding interesting and different add-ins each day with a portion of in stashed in the freezer in 3-cup portions.  What could be simpler?  I made a batch and wow!! It is a GREAT soup. I brought it to the staff at the Village News and they confirmed my opinion.

Then reality hit. I thought of all the people who could benefit from the diet, who would enjoy it and yet not feel they had the time or soup making talents to do so. What was the solution?

Bingo…let’s see if Major Market would make the soup and let’s see of restaurants would make it and then everyone could do the diet and we’d have a Village on a Diet. And if Good Housekeeping would catch our vision they would give permission to use their recipe and maybe even write about us someday…maybe the “village that won by losing.” Well, it has all come to pass. Good Housekeeping magazine executives including Sean Sullivan, Associate Publisher/ Marketing and Delia Hammock, MS, RD, Director of Nutrition, Good Housekeeping Institute encouraged us and made resources available to us. We are grateful for all they have done.

Our local Community Partners also deserve our community’s appreciation, too. Each week Community Partners will be featured in this column.

Fallbrook Community Hospital is one of the Village on a Diet’s Community Partners. Viktoria Meyers, Administrator, Business Development said, “As a community-focused healthcare facility, we are delighted to support the Village on a Diet. Several hospital departments have important outreach programs that dovetail perfectly with losing weight and getting fit. Fallbrook Hospital is committed to community health. You can depend on us to help in any way possible, Ms. Meyers concluded.

Lucca Salon in Bonsall is known for having talented and caring staff. When they heard about the Village on a Diet they volunteered to be a place where people could come to get weighed. Even thought the program is “on your honor” you may want to know where you are starting so you can celebrate the results!  So go to Lucca in Bonsall or Fitness Plus in Fallbrook for free weigh-ins.

As you probably know, professionals of the beauty business know that beauty is more than skin deep. They are the ones who notice …sometimes before others…nutritional deficiencies that are commonly seen in hair, skin, and nails. When you are seeking a professional for nails, ask for Terry or Leah. For hair styling, you will want to talk with Marylou, Beth or Diane. And for the specialized talent of hair extensions, ask for Carolyn. These special women at Lucca are committed to helping you and being a part of the fabric of our community. Thanks Terry, Leah, Marylou, Beth, Diane and Carolyn. And thanks Dru,  representing the management at Lucca who have encouraged staff in this exciting venture.

Fitness Plus, a Community Partner for the Village on a Diet, is offering complimentary weigh-ins on their recently calibrated scale. People might also want to talk with Kevin Mast, Certified Personal Trainer, about their plans for exercise to firm, to accelerate weight loss and to enjoy feelings of strength and flexibility. Fitness Plus is unusual. It is a medically designed fitness and weight loss center under the direction of highly trained professionals. It also has Fallbrook’s only warm water pool. Exercising in water warm (88 to 92 degrees) is often recommended for many adults who would be in pain if they exercised on land.

I, for one, can personally recommend the almost incredible benefits of warm water exercising. Stop in, weigh if you like and become acquainted with Fitness Plus. While you are there, be sure to thank them for being a Community Partner with the Village on a Diet.

All Community Partners will have the Village on a Diet 28-day menu plan and accompanying recipes.
